Last night I went to The Cultch to see "Waiting for Godot" with a friend from the last creative writing class I took with Jami Macarty. The class ended about a month ago, but everyone keeps in touch. It's very cool, if not a little unusual. I wish this kind of unusual was more usual. On Sunday a few of us from this class are going to the Heritage Grill to see Raoul Fernandes read at the Poetic Justice reading. After the main reading there will be an open mic. I think I may read a poem I've been working on.

Being in The Cultch reminded me of my first experience there. I won a young playwrights competition and the prize was to work with a mentor on the play in order to get it into shape for production on The Cultch stage. I met my mentor, whose name was Heidi, at Cafe Calabria on The Drive. Growing up in the suburbs, I went downtown a lot, but this was my first experience with East Van, and I loved it. I drank a camomile tea at Cafe Calabria in a glass mug. And that the owner wouldn't give me the bathroom key until I ordered something: "Are you staying?" My mentor was over an hour late. When she arrived she had one of those rolling baskets typical to what the seniors near my house had, except she was probably 30. But since I was a teenager at this point, she could have been younger or older. Even today I have trouble guessing how old someone is. She told me about her artist boyfriend and how someone important just called him to see his portfolio. She said being an artist was hard, but sometimes it can work out for you if you are persistent.

My play was a melodrama. But instead of the heroine being saved by the hero, she saved herself. I suppose I was trying to subvert genre (though I don't think I realized it then). Regardless, it was the last play I ever wrote.

I like the smell of The Cultch. Plus they have a bar in there now, which may be new or perhaps I just didn't notice it before.

On the first day of 2012, Alicia and I went for dinner at this place called Pho Hoa Hong near my house. It was good! Full of characters! Afterwards we headed to my house where I brought out my finest bone china teacups (read: only teacups) and my Superstore teapot and we ate my remaining Christmas chocolate and drank lemon tea like it was going out of style.

The china was my grandma's and I really should use it more. I mean, maybe it's because I'm from the IKEA generation, but teacups should be liberated.

Yesterday my dear friend Alissa came to my neighourbood to do some much needed thrifting. We'd been talking about it forever, but haven't had a chance until now. We looked around Surrey and then headed out to Langley. In Langley we had an incredible lunch at this Indian restaurant called Ashoka. It was fabulous, and a nice place to spend a rainy afternoon.

She told me about a paper she's writing as part of her MA in English at UBC. It was exciting to hear about all her thoughtful research and thinking on bento boxes. Hopefully I'll get a chance to read it once it's finished.

We also chatted about Lana Del Rey and Tao Lin. And pop culture and the bull's eye and why it's uncomfortable in an academic setting, sometimes.

Today I will visit my Grandma at her care home in Ladner. I hope I can find it without a hitch. Perhaps after that I will go on a nature walk. Or maybe Richmond. When I was a kid I liked shopping in Richmond. Maybe I will go for lunch in Richmond.

Yesterday was fun. I went to the Tommy Douglas Library to pick up a reserved book, but it was closed. Oh well. I actually enjoy taking transit in the rain when I don't really have a schedule to follow. It helps feed my desire to wander. And I like smiling at people at rainy bus stops. Then I went to VPL Central Branch and it was open! So I was able to get my other reserved book. After that, I went to Six Acres, and sat upstairs.

In the evening, I went to Sweet Revenge on Main Street with my friend Marko. It was a lovely place to drink coffee and eat chocolate cake. By the time I got home, my shoes were pretty wet.

In April, Marko and I will see Andrew Bird at the Vogue. He's seen Andrew Bird before, but this will be my first time. I can't wait to hear the live whistling and violin playing.

These pictures were taken last weekend. Sunday. I had both my DSLR and my old Nikon. I was doing my usual, coffee house hopping. I had to pick up some materials from VPL. And buy some white sage for Alicia.

I remember one of the shots that didn't make it on the scanned CD. Just beyond the parkade in the second photo, which I think is Richards, there was about 10 or so pairs of shoes tossed on the lines. You know the image, and have probably seen it so many times before.

The bottom image is Victory Square on Cambie. The yellow smudge at the bottom of the monument says something. Not sure what.

The top image is held together by lines.

Evening set in while I was shooting these. My film was only 400 ISO, making the shots especially grainy. But I think it made for some interesting texture.

Seeing these two images were at first a complete surprise. When thinking of the roll, I didn't remember these shots. But now I remember I was taking my new folding bike on a spin through the neighbourhood. I had to make sure it worked before heading to Nevada for Burning Man.

The first image, with the bike, is at Hawthorn Park near my house. I guess because of the name, it draws a diverse crowd. That day there was a metaphysical festival on. Lots of flowy dresses. No pictures of them though.

And the second image was taken in Whalley, not "Surrey City Centre," but actually Whalley. There is a lot of low-income housing out that way. And there was an outdoor public pool that I'd never seen before either. A City of Surrey worker was painting the walls of the pool seafoam.

I think I will post more tomorrow.

In the summer I bought a film Nikon Tele-Touch for $2. I had no idea if it worked but the intriguing thing about this camera was the fact that it had both a 35/70 mm lens to choose from. Pretty cool for a point and shoot.

It took a surprising amount of time for me to shoot the 24 exposures. As a woman who can easily take over 100 pictures during a simple day at the beach, there was something special about theses shots. I had no idea what they were going to look like, or even if the camera was functioning properly. Yet, the camera found its way into summer and fall points of my life. Sometimes I'd have the camera with me without taking any pictures.

The faded graininess of these shots appeal to me. These shots were not put through any filters, they are just as they are. And this makes me happy.

This is the first of a series of posts with the photos from that film. Of the 24 exposures, only 20 were scanned to disk. I can remember what two of the pictures that didn't make it were of: Copy on the balcony a sunny day after I got home from work, and a picture of a blueberry tart and coffee at Everything Cafe on Pender after Alicia and I went shopping at Project Space. What the other two shots were of, I have no idea.

In this post, the images are from the Vancouver Pride Parade. My eyes are closed in the last shot and I'm talking about something, but I can't remember what. I don't think it's the most flattering picture, but I include it nonetheless.

Last night I had a great meeting with Aaron Moran. It's exciting to discuss a new project. As we realized during our respective coffee and chai latte drinking, the time for a collaboration is now. Now is the only time.

We have talked about doing a big collaboration together for a while, but I was always distracted by something else. Ever since we rekindled our friendship when he sent me his Pink Lemonade zines back in 2010 (I think it was then?), it's been amazing. He's a talented and serious conceptual artist, and a true and remarkable friend.

I won't get into too much detail right now about the collaboration yet. But we're off to a promising start.

last weekend i had a dream. stop me if i've told you this before. and i was in a barn. a barn where i was getting a tattoo. the tattoo was made from string. i was getting a spiral. i could choose between black string and beige and white. i chose white. stop me if i've told you this before.

i chose white. and they started to tattoo my white spiral on my arm. it hurt so much. the tattoo artist admitted that it was excruciating. it was excruciating pain. excruciating. simply.

it hurt so much, i had to stop it. stop me if you've heard this. i don't always remember who i've told things to. and there was one of my old professors there. and he wasn't wearing the usual glasses. and he was wearing a faded black t-shirt. and he was sitting in the space where you normally go behind the counter. he had put a chair there and sat with his knees towards the counter. stop me.

and he wondered why i couldn't go through with my tattoo. even though it was excruciating. even though i picked the string i wanted, even though i picked the design and the location on my arm. he wasn't wearing his usual glasses.

This morning as I drank my first cup of weekend coffee and thought how I should not go looking at the internet because I should be reading or cleaning or trying to get back my lost jpegs, I opened my old mac laptop and found this image on a Tumblr.

The lines and the sharp, off-centre angles caught my eye. It's like the lines could connect everything at the corners of the buildings but something went wrong and everything's just missing. The perspective.

I don't know who it's by. The Tumblr didn't say. It had been reblogged 4 times. And there were a couple of hearts {<3}. If I had my Tumblr up and running I could have just reblogged as well. But instead there's this.

Also in my internet wanderings, I came across this poem by Frank O'Hara that I read last year and had forgotten about until I read an excerpt referenced in a paper about Gertrude Stein's art collection. And I never realized that the full title of the poem was "Poem: À La Recherche de Gertrude Stein." I thought it was just "Poem."

Disappearing Vancouver

Tuesday was Lester's Army's premiere of their short film Disappearing Vancouver at the Memory Festival at the Roundhouse Theatre in Yaletown. Before the film, three storytellers shared a story about Vancouver. The film drew together footage of contemporary Vancouver and archive footage. Maksim Bentsianov, the filmmaker, went to the Vancouver Archives at VPL for the vintage film, but also used clips he borrowed from the personal collection of seniors interviewed in the film. It was beautiful. The Disappearing Vancouver podcasts will be posted on the Lester's Army website next week along with the Vancouver Is Awesome site.

Film is such an interesting medium. It's something I want to learn more about. In the summer I saw the Surrealist show at Vancouver Art Gallery. The Surrealists were interested in film as a medium for art, but couldn't afford to make their own films. They used discarded film footage to repurpose into their own art. I wrote about my interest in this show at the time. My mind goes back to Joseph Cornell's Rose Hobart frequently. A few months ago I watched a collection of Surrealist films.

A while ago I saw this video of Lana Del Rey, a singer who became mega popular after posting her videos on YouTube, or so the story goes. She made this music video for her song "Video Games" herself from found footage. The videos have a nostalgic and pastiche look, and really nail the current popular neo-1960s aesthetic right now. As a video, the editing is really good. With the title "Video Games" it seems the video and the song are one. Usually when I think of music videos, they come after the initial song making. I wonder what the Surrealists would have thought about YouTube!

On Tuesday, Nov. 15, Lester's Army is presenting its film Disappearing Vancouver at the Memory Festival happening at the Roundhouse Theatre in Yaletown. I'm looking forward to checking it out. The film consists of a series of interviews focused on how seniors remember the Vancouver of their childhood and what they think about Vancouver today. The interviews take place at the site of their childhood homes.

I've been lucky enough to get a sneak listen of the audio from the film. Lester's Army is creating podcasts from the film that will appear on their website and on Vancouver Is Awesome in the coming months. I helped the producers record the narration of the podcasts. It's been a lot of fun. In December, the producers will join me in the studio at Vancouver Coop Radio to talk about their project on the Storytelling Show.

Monument(al)

Saturday was the opening of Monument(al), the latest show by Aaron Moran, Sarah Gee, and Jessica Bell. The show was curated by Denise Liu and Linus Lam.

I loved all the new work. I'm always excited to see Aaron's latest, as well as Sarah Gee's. Both have created amazing pieces for this show.

This was the first time I've seen Jessica Bell's work in person, save a few smaller pieces Aaron has in his personal collection.

In this show, Bell uses sewing and fabric to create her work. In the above photo, Bell's work is the four pieces on the walls. The photo doesn't give justice to the detail, but her geometric assemblages are tight and flat, with edges and points of intersection that are crisp.

What I found most interesting about her work is how the act of sewing brings forth thoughts of domesticity, perhaps even femininity. The flatness of the fabric reminds me of the comforts of a handmade quilt. Whereas the fabric itself, usually grey, khaki, or black, is institutional and sterile, like army uniform or hospital bedding material.

In some sections of her work, the seams were clearly visible because she used a contrasting coloured thread. For instance, in one piece she uses white thread on a black fabric. Since the work was stretched to fit a frame, the strain on the seams was even more pronounced. Half of her work was behind glass frames and the other half left the fabric exposed.

On the show Tumblr, Liu and Lam interview Bell and she says this about working with a sewing machine: "I have control, but the machine can take it from me even from a moment and that changes everything. I find myself anticipating disasters and almost counting on them for the way the works evolve. [1]"

The machine as powerful and unpredictable, the process a struggle. This tension is evident in the work, with some seams looking crooked and misaligned. I love it!

The Storytelling Show: Nikki Reimer

On Sunday I hosted the Storytelling Show on Vancouver Co-op Radio. My guest for the evening was local poet Nikki Reimer. She read from her first book, [sic], and shared new work from a manuscript she's currently working on that uses found material. Nikki is a fantastic reader, and throughout the interview she spoke about her writing process and many writing interests, including her love for the chapbook.

Wherein intensions slick invention

Last night Ashleigh and I intended to go to an event at Emily Carr University. It was something to do with publishing and book design, and it seemed like a very worthwhile thing to go to. But we got lost in the campus, and decided it was a sign that we should probably go to the Backstage Lounge instead, which we did. And it was great fun.

Among other things, we talked a lot about Aki Kaurismäki, the Finnish director and writer. I'd just seen Le Havre at VIFF and Ashleigh has seen Kaurismäki's past film, The Man Without a Past, which I really want to see now.

There was a hockey game in the background, something I had forgotten about. But now it's here. That sound like a magnified bathroom fan.
